What makes a legend most: Jessica Lange morphed into Joan Crawford on the set of Ryan Murphy’s new anthology series Feud in LA on Thursday

Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon are broadening their repertoires by playing Joan Crawford and Bette Davis respectively speaking.

The actresses were spotted hard at work beneath heavy make-up and retro hairstyles on the Los Angeles set of Ryan Murphy’s new anthology series Feud.

The first eight-episode installment casts Jessica, 67, and Susan, 69, as the legendary movie stars who came together for the first time to star in the 1962 film Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?

Crawford and Davis were desperate at that point and hoping the thriller – and most importantly their shared top billing – would pump life into their flagging careers.

Jessica had Joan’s immaculate look down pat while strolling across the set with hair carefully coiffed and a pair of tip-tilted shades over her eyes.

Her costume was an ivory embossed dress with modest neckline and knee-length hem that spoke of early 1960s fashion.

The white robe and the comfortable slippers gave away the fact that this was just a movie.

At another point during the day, Jessica was her usual self with blonde hair curling to her shoulders.

She may have been heading home, for she was holding bottled water and wearing comfortable blue track trousers with matching blue top and brown moccasins.

Susan, meanwhile, had it made in the shade of a very large umbrella – courtesy of a production staffer – as she traversed the space between dressing room to camera.

The veteran star wore blue culottes with a loose-fitting light blue blouse along with dainty trainers.

Jessica is no stranger to the anthology series, having starred in Murphy’s American Horror Story.

Feud is Susan’s first foray into the television creator’s unique genre.

Feud also stars Alfred Molina, Stanley Tucci, Judy Davis and Dominic Burgess, while Brad Pitt serves as executive producer.

Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? became a cult black and white classic, but the real drama occurred between leading ladies Crawford and Davis who loathed each other.
