Is Joan Crawford Giving Queen Elizabeth Side-Eye in This Archival Footage?

The tradition of obsessing over Hollywood meeting royalty is hardly a new one. In fact, it’s probably as old as Hollywood itself. Now, thanks to some 1956 archive footage from the U.C.L.A. Film & Television Archive, we can see what happened when Queen Elizabeth met some of the biggest stars of the day, including Joan Crawford, Anita Ekberg, and Marilyn Monroe. And if this encounter between the famously stony-faced Crawford and the young Queen were to go down today, it would make for perfect GIF fodder. In fact . . .

Now, it’s up for debate whether Crawford is going for “catty side-eye” or “appropriately demure,” and we’re not about to stir up a controversy about a 60-year-old glance. But suffice it to say that there is precedence for snarky facial expressions in classic Hollywood, and if anyone was going to toss a royal some sass, it would be Mommie Dearest herself. Too bad the current Duchess of Cambridge wasn’t alive to give the official royal response to Crawford (Kate can dish side-eye with the best of them). You can scan even more star-studded archive footage for questionable expressions during the U.C.L.A. Film & Television Archive Tribute Wednesday night on Turner Classic Movies.
